Still it would be best if Microsoft would just allow WMP to play mp4 files from directly within PP as it does for other video files. You then have to click on the object to get WMP to open it.

If you go to the top of the page in the link above there is also a method to insert video as an object which does allow you to insert the movie into powerpoint. I tried using environment variables in the file name but this didn't work for me. Also the URL value must point to the location of the file on the machine you are running powerpoint Drawback is that the file is not embedded into the powerpoint and exists outside of it. I tried it on another desktop with Office 2010 and it worked. Unfortunately it doesn't work on the desktop I need it to work on because of the way Office 2010 was installed to meet security restrictions here. Ok I found this workaround that appears to work on some machines.
